Our government was formed to protect our rights. It reflects the shared values of its members. Government helps to control behavior and keep the peace, and to keep the country strong. It helps to solve problems that are too big for individuals to deal with, such as protecting the country from outside attack, building and maintaining parks and roads, and preserving the environment. Government also helps to protect and preserve the common culture and beliefs of the nation.
Without government, the country would be disorganized. There would be no order to the way roads are built or towns and cities are planned. People would disagree about ways to settle arguments, deal with crime, and handle a multitude of other problems. The institution of government helps people solve these problems. It helps establish law and order, protect the individual’s security, provide public services, and maintain institutions.
