colorful pencil The Phoenicians wrote in a Semitic (a family of ancient Near Eastern languages) alphabetic script that resembled early Hebrew script. This script was taught to others with whom they traded. Most notable, perhaps, were the Greeks.

The Greeks then adopted their alphabet and adapted it to fit their own purposes! Like Egyptian and early Hebrew, the Phoenician language was made up primarily of symbols. Take note of these examples.

On a piece of paper, write the shapes of the letters. The Phoenician alphabet was a consonant-only alphabet used in writing without the use of vowels. It is different from Egyptian because it uses letters instead of pictures.

Find both Egyptian and Hebrew alphabets on the Internet. How are they different from the Phoenician alphabet? How are they similar? Note some differences and similarities on your worksheet.
