Further Study

Phoenician study, as well as any of the ancient Near Eastern peoples, gives us a real glimpse into our own beginnings. One can still see the influences of these cultures--Hebrew, Greek, Roman, etc.--in our governmental practices, our artwork, our writing, and even in our understanding of the world. You will be studying Greece at length in 5th grade, but this may be a good opportunity to find a children’s version of The Odyssey and to look for references to the Phoenician people.
