These second grade students have organized a food drive! They are collecting healthy food to give to their community. Their goal is to collect about 400 cans of fruit, 700 cans of vegetables, 600 cans of soup, and 900 packages of rice. The second graders need help rounding the food donations to the nearest hundred.

Rounding to hundred is a way to estimate, just like rounding to 10. When we round to the nearest hundred, we use multiples of 100 as benchmark numbers: 0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1,000. Let’s help the second graders find out if they’ve reached their goal!

Here is the collection of canned fruit. The second graders have counted the cans and packed them away in boxes. They collected 432 cans. Their goal was to collect about 400. Can you help them round 432 to the nearest hundred?

Let’s use a number line to help! Here is 432 and here are our benchmark numbers. Which benchmark number is closest to 432? That’s right! 400 is the closest benchmark number. 432 rounded to the nearest hundred is 400. The second graders have the perfect amount of canned fruit!

Here are boxes filled with canned vegetables. The second graders collected 689 cans. They needed to collect about 700. Can you help them round 689 to the nearest hundred? Let’s try!

Here is 689 on the number line. Notice that the benchmark numbers are still multiples of 100.

That is because we need to round 689 to the nearest hundred. What benchmark number is closest to 689? That’s right, 700! The second grader’s goal was to have about 700 cans of vegetables. Great job!

These boxes are filled with cans of soup. There are so many! There are 550 cans of soup and the second graders were hoping to collect about 600. Let’s help them round 550 to the nearest hundred.

Here is 550 on the number line and here are our benchmark numbers. Which benchmark number is closest to 550? Uh oh, 550 is right between 500 and 600.

The ten’s and one’s place values are very important when we round to the nearest hundred. Here we have a 5 in the ten’s place and a 0 in the one’s place. In 550, the 5 is telling us to round up to the nearest benchmark number. That means 550 rounded to the nearest hundred is 600. Great job! There are about 600 cans of soup.

These are the last boxes from the food drive! They are filled with 914 bags of rice. That’s a lot of food! The second grade students set a goal of collecting 914 boxes of rice. Let’s round 914 to the nearest hundred.

First, find 914 on the number line. Great job! Now place the benchmark numbers on the number line. We need to round 914 to the nearest hundred. What benchmark number is closest to 914? That’s right! 914 rounded to the nearest hundred is 900. Great job!

The second graders collected about 400 cans of fruit, 700 cans of vegetables, 600 cans of soup, and 900 packages of rice. Thank you for helping them round to the nearest hundred!

The students have 338 cans of fruit. What is 338 rounded to the nearest 100?
