In this activity, you'll need several different sizes of containers. You will compare volumes
by filling them with rice. Click the Activity button for your worksheet, and follow the
steps in the slideshow below. When you are finished, submit the worksheet to your teacher
for a grade.
Step 1
Gather jars, cups, bowls, containers, and small pans--whatever you have
available to you. Choose at least eight.
Step 2
Label each container with a different number from 1 to 8. You can write the
number on tape and then stick it to the container.
Step 3
Choose any two containers. Draw them, with their labels, on your worksheet.
Step 4
Compare the two containers. Which one do you think is bigger? Circle the
container that you think will hold the most rice on your worksheet.
Step 5
Now, prove it! How can you figure out which one holds more rice?
Try filling up the container you think is smaller, then dump
it in the bigger one. If all of the rice fits, you've
guessed right!
Did you guess right? Sometimes, volume is not easy to guess just by looking.
You may be surprised by some of your guesses. Answer the question on your
worksheet.
Repeat so that you do six different tests, using two different containers
each time.
