Let’s watch a video about comparing volumes!
Aaliyah, Sophia, Noah, and Lucas are ready to work together to build the biggest sandcastle! They need to find out which container has the largest volume so they can build the biggest sandcastle. Can you help them?
Aaliyah, Sophia, Noah, and Lucas are playing on the playground. They want to build the
biggest sandcastle. Can you help them find out which container to use?
We need to find the volume of each container to know which one will make the biggest
sandcastle. The volume of a container tells us how much space it takes up.
We will look at how much sand goes in each container to find out which is the
biggest.
Let’s start with this jar. We will fill it with sand to see how much space the jar takes
up. Aaliyah will pour sand into this jar.
There! This jar is full of sand.
Sophia wants to find the volume of this cup. She will fill it with sand to see how much
space it takes up.
Great! The cup is full of sand.
Which container has a bigger volume, the jar or the cup? Let’s take a guess and see if
we are right.
Hmm, the jar looks bigger than the cup. It probably has a bigger volume.
We can check our guess by emptying out the jar, and then pouring the sand from the cup
into the jar. That will help us see if the jar holds more, less, or the same amount of
sand as the cup. Sophia will pour the cup of sand into the jar.
The sand from the cup does not fill up the jar. That means the jar can hold more sand.
It takes up more space and has a bigger volume!
Noah wants to use this bucket. He needs to find its volume. Noah will fill up the bucket
with sand to see how much space it takes up.
There! The bucket is full of sand.
Lucas found this tall storage bin. He thinks it might make the biggest sandcastle! He
needs to find the bin’s volume. Lucas will fill it up with sand to see how much space it
takes up.
All set! The bin is full!
Which container has a bigger volume, the bucket or the tall storage bin?
Let’s take a guess and see if we are right. The storage bin is very tall. Maybe it has a
bigger volume. We can check our guess by emptying out the bin and pouring the sand from
the bucket into it. We will see if the bin holds more, less, or the same amount of sand
as the bucket. Noah will pour the bucket of sand into the bin.
Uh oh, the sand is spilling out of the bin.
The bucket holds more sand than the bin! The bucket takes up more space and has a bigger
volume!
The kids will use the bucket to make their sandcastle. Thank you for your help finding
the container with the biggest volume!
Which container has the largest volume?
Incorrect. This vase is tall, but it is not wide. It does not have the largest capacity. Try again!
Incorrect. The mug is shorter than the other two containers. It would hold the least amount, so it has the smallest volume. Try again!
Correct! The pot has the largest volume!
