Goal:
Different trees grow in different ways throughout the year.
Click through the slides below to find out more about how
deciduous and coniferous trees grow.
Deciduous Leaves
Deciduous trees have broad leaves. Look at the
pictures below. All these leaves are from deciduous
trees.
Coniferous Leaves
Coniferous trees have needles, or leaves, that look like the pictures below. They also produce cones. That’s why they are called conifers.
Deciduous Trees and Seasons
In fall, the leaves of deciduous trees die and turn beautiful colors. The leaves fall to the ground, and water and nutrients are stored in the trunk. The tree hibernates for the winter. In spring, the tree begins to grow again, and many trees produce beautiful flowers.
Coniferous Trees and Seasons
Coniferous trees can keep their leaves in fall and winter because there’s a waxy coating on the leaves. This keeps water inside the leaves. That’s why they are also called evergreen trees, because they stay green all year.
