Each family had a long table with chairs and benches for sitting. The rocking chair was invented in America. It became very popular in those early days.
The parents slept in a high bed with ropes strung across the bottom, instead of a box spring like most beds have today. Their mattresses were stuffed with feathers, corn husks, or cotton. A smaller bed was usually built beneath the parents’ bed; it was called a trundle bed. It was pulled out into the room at night. This was for the children, who slept together, even when there were three or four of them.
