A map scale is the distance on a map in relation to the distance in real life. It tells you how far something would be in real life based on what you see on a map.

If a map scale showed every one inch equals one mile, then for every inch you measure on the map, it would be one mile on the ground, or in real life.

So if you measured four inches from the school to the library, it would be four miles in real life.
