How do you conduct research?

Now that you have chosen a topic to research, it's time to get started! Begin by asking yourself some questions.
What do you already know about the topic?
What do you want to learn more about? What are you still wondering?
For example, maybe you want to learn about the different landmarks in the western part of the United States or the names and characteristics of the native tribes of the Great Lakes states. Maybe you want to learn more about a U.S. president or a famous American inventor. Whatever topic you choose, write down some questions about what you are wondering and what you want to learn more about.

What to research | Choose a topic to research. |
Where to research | Use resources, like books, encyclopedias, and reliable Internet sites. |
How to research | Search keywords related to your topic, such as names, locations, and other information you want to know. |
Take notes | Write down notes about the information you found and where you found it (book, online, interview, etc.) |
Primary vs. secondary sources | As you research, keep in mind where you find your information. Primary sources are those that come from firsthand accounts. Secondary sources are interpretations of the information found in primary sources. |
Images | Find images that help you understand your topic. Images can bring your research to life. Your images should be labeled for reuse or free to use. |
