One thing that was clear when it came to planning for the United States' government is that there needed to be specific power for federal and state governments. The federal government was given charge of overseeing the entire nation, making sure the rights of the citizens are protected. They are also in charge of international relations. State governments are in charge of the state--each state has their own constitution. Look at the Venn diagram below to compare the power for both federal and state government.
