Help for the Land

How did the government try to prevent another dust bowl from occurring?

Goal:

Goal:

Heavy rain over a prairie in Brittany, France

It finally rained in 1939, almost eight years after the beginning of the drought. Prior to that, President Roosevelt created an initiative in 1934 to plant the Great Plains Shelterbelt. This belt was a shield of trees planted from Canada all the way to Texas.

This shield of trees would help create a wind break to protect the soil in the plains area from wind erosion and evaporation. By 1942, 220 million trees had been planted, stretching over 18,600 miles. This project was meant to help save America's farms by preventing another dust bowl.
