Poor harvests and famine sent many Irish to the United States beginning in the 1830s. In 1845, about three-quarters of Irish potatoes were ruined because the crops became diseased. This was disastrous for the Irish people, because potatoes were their main source of food. Many people died of starvation, and the famine made many Irish want to move to America.
The Irish brought many cultural traditions and customs that we still see today. Research Irish immigrants in the U.S. in the 1800s.
