Phillis Wheatley

Phillis Wheatley was one of the most well-known poets in America in her day. She was born in Africa, but kidnapped and sold as a slave when she was seven years old. John Wheatley bought her to be an attendant for his wife. Phillis was very bright and learned English quickly, as well as Greek and Latin. She wrote “Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral,” the first volume of poetry ever to be published by an African American. Phillis truly triumphed over the circumstances of her life.
