What are numerical expressions?

You may be wondering what a numerical expression is. A numerical expression is a math “sentence” that has only numbers and operations symbols (+, -, x, ÷). A numerical expression doesn’t even have an equal sign!
You generally evaluate a numerical expression. That means that you figure out what it is equal to. In the numerical expression shown, if you work from left to right, you get 3 when you evaluate it.

These problems didn’t have any special tricks to them. It was fine to work from left to right to get to your answer. In the rest of the lesson, you are going to learn some rules about the order you should use when you have more than one operation in an expression.
