Have you ever heard the statement, "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally"? Well, it is not a statement about a crazy aunt—but an acrostic to help you in math! An acrostic is basically where the first letter of a statement helps you remember something specific. In this case, the acrostic will help you remember the order that you need to complete operations in math.

Order of Operations: you should complete operations in this order- always from left to right. P E M D A S, Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally which means step 1 is parentheses, step 2 is exponents, step 3 is muliptly or divide, and step 4 is add or subtract.

You have practiced operations (+, -, x, ÷) for many years and should know your basic facts very well. In this lesson, you will use your adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing skills to evaluate numerical expressions in the correct order using the order of operations.
