Many modern countries, including the United States, are multicultural―they include multiple cultures instead of just one. American citizens tend to base their values on the cultures with which they connect most strongly. However, they are influenced by the values and traditions of other groups as well.
Both of the stories you read in this lesson began in cultures that are part of life in the United States. The Ojibwe people are Native Americans―the original people of North America. And German families have been immigrating to North America since before the United States was founded in 1776.
Do you see evidence of Ojibwe and German cultural ideas in the society you inhabit? Open a new word-processing file, and paste the prompt below at the top of the document. Label the entry with this lesson’s title, and type a response to the prompt.
List the themes or lessons expressed in each of the fairy tales you read in this lesson. After reviewing your list, choose one theme or lesson that relates to your own life. Use evidence from your personal experience to further describe the theme. What examples of the theme do you see in the world around you?
When you have written a complete and detailed answer to the journal prompt, save the file so that you can open it again for the next lesson with a journal assignment. (You will submit your journal to your teacher for grading once or twice during the module.)
