Let’s watch another cooking video. This time Chef Amy will show us how to cook picadillo, a traditional recipe from Latin American cuisine. Take notes on all the steps, as you’ll have to answer some questions about the recipe afterwards.
[MUSIC PLAYING] Hi. I'm Chef Amy, and today, I'm going to show you how to make picadillo. Picadillo is a traditional Latin American dish and can make for an incredibly flavorful meal for your whole family. To start, heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a bit of vegetable oil. Once the oil is hot, add diced yellow onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Saute them until the onion softens and is lightly browned.
Then add oregano, cumin, and a little salt and pepper. This mixture of spices gives this dish a deep and unique flavor. Now, add 3/4 of a pound of lean ground turkey or beef a little bit at a time, breaking it up as you stir. Reduce the heat to low and add low sodium black beans and diced tomatoes, and let them simmer for about 15 minutes.
Lastly, we'll stir in our final touches, chopped green olives and raisins. Let them cook for about two more minutes, and then you're ready to serve. Picadillo is often served over brown rice, but you could also serve it with corn or whole wheat tortillas or use it as a filling for stuffed peppers.
