Objectives

Students will:

1. Use the octet rule to explain why elements form ions and to describe the formation of negative and positive ions.
2. Determine the charges formed by elements based on the number of valence electrons and their location in the periodic table.
3. Name cations and anions.
4. Determine the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in a given ion.
