Riley is excited to go to her school store today.
Riley will use pennies, nickels, and dimes to buy the items she wants.
A penny is worth 1 cent. A nickel is worth 5 cents. A dime is worth 10 cents.
Let’s help Riley with the first item she wants to buy. She wants this eraser.
The tag on the eraser says it costs 4 cents. What coins can we use to buy the eraser?
The dime and nickel are worth too much. We will use pennies!
4 pennies makes 4 cents! 1, 2, 3, 4. Riley will use 4 pennies to buy the eraser.
Now Riley wants to buy this pencil sharpener. It costs 7 cents!
We could use 7 pennies to buy the sharpener, but let’s try a bigger coin. Can we use a
dime?
No, a dime is worth 10 cents. That’s too much! We need to use a nickel.
A nickel is worth 5 cents. We still need 2 more cents. We can use 2 pennies for
that!
5, 6, 7.
1 nickel and 2 pennies makes 7 cents. Now Riley can buy the pencil sharpener!
Riley sees a pair of scissors! It costs 12 cents! Think about what coins we can use.
Let’s use 2 nickels. 5, 10. There are 2 cents left.
We should use 2 pennies!
5, 10, 11, 12.
2 nickels and 2 pennies is 12 cents.
We can also use 1 dime and 2 pennies to make 12 cents.
Riley can buy the pair of scissors!
Riley wants one more thing. This calculator! It costs 49 cents.
What coins can we use to buy the calculator?
