Goal: Divide shapes into halves.

There are different ways to make equal parts. One way is to make halves. Halves are 2 equal parts of a whole.

Look at the watermelon. It is partitioned, or divided, into two parts that are equal.

Each part is one half. The watermelon is partitioned into halves. Do you see the word part in partition? To partition is to divide. When you partition a shape into halves, you are dividing or splitting it into 2 equal pieces.
