How does the compass rose work?
A compass rose is a design on a map that shows direction. Directions can help you find your way around your town, city, school, mall, or other building. Read through this slideshow to see how the compass rose works.
This is a compass rose.
The letter N means north. It is at the top of the compass rose.
Letter E means east. It is on the right side of the compass rose.
Letter S means south. It is at the bottom of the compass rose.
Letter W means west. It is on the left side of the compass rose.
The letters NE are smaller and are between the N and the E. NE means northeast. Going that direction means you are going north and east at the same time.
The letters NW are smaller and are between the N and the W. NW means northwest. Going that direction means you are going north and west at the same time.
The letters SE are smaller and are between the S and the E. SE means southeast. Going that direction means you are going south and east at the same time.
The letters SW are smaller and are between the S and the W. SW means southwest. Going that direction means you are going south and west as the same time.
