Let’s Learn to Compare Time

How do you determine which activity takes more time?
Activities all take an amount of time. Some activities take a short amount of time. Some activities take a long amount of time. We can compare the amount of time different activities take. When activities take a short amount of time, we say they take less time. When activities take a long amount of time, we say they take more time. Let’s take a look at some examples!
You do a lot of activities every day, so you already know about how much time it takes to do those activities. You eat breakfast and brush your teeth every day!
Think about how much time each of these activities takes. When you eat breakfast, you sit down, you drink something, and you eat.
What about when you brush your teeth? Maybe you set a timer to make sure you brush your teeth long enough. Is the timer very long? Not at all!
Which activity takes more time?
Correct!
Incorrect. Brushing your teeth takes less time than eating breakfast!
Let’s think about some other activities you do during the day. You spend time on your school work, and you have a snack.
Think about how much time you spend on your schoolwork. Is it a lot? How much time does it take you to eat a snack?
Which activity takes more time?
Correct!
Incorrect. It doesn’t take very long to eat a snack. It takes more time to do your schoolwork!
You’re doing great so far! Now, let’s choose the activity that takes less time! Maybe you help make dinner. You also clean up your toys.
Think about how long it takes to do these two activities. Which one takes less time, or the shorter amount of time?
Try again. It takes a while to cook dinner. It takes longer to cook dinner than to put away your toys.
Correct! It takes less time to clean up toys than to make dinner.
Let’s try one more! You put on your pajamas, and you read books before bed.
Which activity takes less time?
Correct!
Incorrect. It takes less time to put on your pajamas!
