Logan is buying food for Patches, the guinea pig. You can draw pictures to multiply and find how much food he is buying. Watch the video below to help Logan!
Logan’s uncle is at the store buying food for Patches. He calls Logan and tells him about each type of fruit and vegetable he is buying. Let’s watch how Logan uses pictures to help him multiply and find the amount of food his uncle is buying.
His uncle calls and tells him the number of groups, and how many are in each group. Logan will write a multiplication equation and then draw pictures to help him find the total. Let's watch and see how Logan uses pictures to help him multiply.
His uncle says he found 7 bunches of 3 carrots. Logan knows this can be said as 7 groups of 3 or 7 times 3. He writes 7 x 3 on his paper. Now he needs to draw a picture to help him find how many carrots that will be. First, he draws 7 circles for the number of groups because there are 7 bunches of carrots.
Next, he has to draw the number of carrots in each group. There are 3 carrots in each bunch, so he needs to draw 3 shapes in each circle.
He draws 3 rectangles in each circle to show the 3 carrots.
Now his picture shows the total number of carrots. To find the product of 7 times 3, he can add each group of 3, or he can skip count by 3 seven times. He tries adding the groups of 3.
3 plus 3 equals 6. 6 plus 3 equals 9. 9 plus 3 equals 12. 12 plus 3 equals 15. 15 plus 3 equals 18. 18 plus 3 equals 21. 7 groups of 3 equal 21, or 7 times 3 equals 21. Logan’s uncle bought 21 carrots for Patches!
Now his uncle wants to buy apples. There are 8 bags of 5 apples, so Logan can use 8 times 5. What picture can Logan make to find the total number of apples? He needs to find the number of groups, or bags of apples, and the number of apples in each group, or bag.
How many bags of apples are there?
8! What is the number of apples in each bag?
5! Use the numbers you found to draw a picture. First, how many circles do you need? The circles show the number of groups, or bags of apples.
That’s right! You need 8 circles. Let’s use stars this time to show the number in each group. How many stars do you need in each circle?
Yes! You need 5 stars because there are 5 apples in each bag. Now you can use the picture to find the total number of apples. Try skip counting by 5 eight times.
5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40. 40! 8 times 5 equals 40.Logan has 40 apples for Patches!
Logan is so excited to help the class feed Patches with the food his uncle bought. Thank you for watching how Logan used pictures to help him multiply.
Question:
Logan sees 7 snack bags of baby carrots, and each bag has 7 carrots. He can use 7 x 7 to find the total number of carrots. How many circles does he need to draw a picture? How many shapes go in each circle?
7 \({ \times }\) 7 = ?
This picture has 7 circles with 7 triangles in each circle. It shows 7 \({ \times }\) 7!
Question:
How many baby carrots does Logan buy for Patches?
7 \({ \times }\) 7 = ?
7 \({ \times }\) 7 = 49. Logan buys 49 baby carrots for Patches!
