How do you use pictures to multiply?

Goal: Define a multiplication picture and how it is used to multiply.

Caleb’s mom sent in 8 bags of broccoli to school. There are 2 pieces of broccoli in each bag. How many pieces of broccoli did Caleb’s mom send in to feed Patches? We can multiply to find out!

8 bags of 2 broccoli heads

When we multiply, we write a multiplication sentence. A multiplication sentence is made up of two factors, a multiplication sign (\({ \times }\)), an equal sign (=), and the product. The factors tell us the number of groups and how many are in each group. The product is the answer!

factor times factor

9 \({ \times }\) 2

🤔 This is a multiplication expression. It does not have an equal sign or the product.

9 \({ \times }\) 2 = 18

😄 Yes! This is a multiplication equation because it has 2 factors, an (x) sign, an (=) sign, and the product!

A multiplication picture is a picture we can draw to help us multiply. It shows the number of groups and the number in each group. The first factor is the number of groups. The second factor is the number in each group. You can use circles to show the number of groups. You can use any shape to show the number in each group. Then you can add the groups or skip count to find the product!

Number of groups times number in each group = total number. Arrow under number of groups labeled number of circles. Arrow under number in each group labeled number of shapes in each group

Click to see the parts of the equation. Each part tells us what we need to make a multiplication picture!
