Boys and girls, do we have a special tour for you today! Chopper the Duck is going to take us on his helicopter tours above a tropical island! He is an expert pilot. To fly, customers have to pay in coins and know their value. Are you ready? Let’s take off!

Chopper’s first tour will take us over the beach. It costs 25¢ to take the beach tour in Chopper’s helicopter.

The customers look for the coins to make the flight.

They got it! They have 1 dime, 2 nickels, and 5 pennies!

Remember, we always start with finding the largest coin value first.

Our largest valued coin is the dime.

If we add up the value of the coins, we get 10¢ + 10¢ + 5¢, which equals 25¢.

That’s 25¢ for the flight!

The beach is beautiful!

Chopper’s second tour will take us over the sharks. It costs 50¢ to take the shark tour. The customer can use 2 quarters to pay for the tour. A quarter is valued at 25¢, so 25¢ + 25¢ = 50¢.

The customers look for the coins to pay for the flight.

They got it! They have 3 dimes, 2 nickels, and 10 pennies!

If we add up the value of the coins, we get 30¢ + 10¢ + 10¢, which equals 50¢.

That’s 50¢ for the flight!

The sharks are AMAZING!

Chopper’s third tour will take us over the waterfalls. It costs 3 quarters, or 75¢, to take the waterfall tour in Chopper’s helicopter. 3 quarters equal 25¢ + 25¢ + 25¢ to get 75¢.

The customers look for the coins to make the flight.

They got it! They have 4 dimes, 6 nickels, and 5 pennies!

If we add up the value of the coins, we get 40¢ + 30¢ + 5¢, which equals 75¢.

That’s 75¢ for the flight!

The waterfalls are spectacular! Chopper’s fourth tour will take us over his old friend Whale. It costs 4 quarters, or 1 dollar, to take the whale tour.

The customers look for the coins to make the flight.

They got it! They have 2 quarters, 2 dimes, 1 nickel, and 25 pennies!

If we add up the value of the coins, we get 50¢ + 20¢ + 5¢ + 25¢, which equals 100¢ or 1 dollar. Whoa, wait! 100¢ is the same as a dollar bill!

Our old friend Whale is so cool!

Chopper’s final tour is extra special. It will take us over a volcano. This flight costs $1, BUT you can use only quarters to pay.

The customers look for the quarters to make the flight.

They got it! They have 4 quarters!

If we add up the value of the coins, we get 25¢ + 25¢ + 25¢ + 25¢, which equals 100¢, or $1. That’s $1, or 100¢, for the flight!

The volcano is magnificent, overflowing with lava!

Before we go, Chopper wants to test your skills. Remember, there are MANY ways to add coins together to get the same total. Let’s look at other combinations.

25¢ can be calculated with 25 pennies!
25¢ = 25¢

50¢ can be calculated with 5 dimes!
50¢ = 50¢

75¢ can be calculated with 5 dimes + 5 nickels.
50¢ + 25¢ = 75¢

$1 can be calculated with 3 quarters + 1 dime + 2 nickels + 5 pennies.
75¢ + 10¢ + 10¢ + 5¢ = 100¢, or $1

Chopper had a blast showing you his tours of the tropical island. Now it’s your turn to explore counting coins in this lesson!

As we have learned, there are many ways to calculate coins. Let’s practice counting coins that equal a dollar. Use the activity below to practice solving these kinds of problems on your own. Calculate the value of the coins on each slide. Show how the coins equal $1 by dividing them into groups and then adding up the value of the groups. Then click the Show Me button to check your work.

For this activity, you may want to use your coin cutouts to help you count the coins.

4 quarters = $1
