Goal: Watch this video to learn how to solve addition equations using the properties of operations.
Daniel needs your help to make his healthy snacks. Can you use the properties of operations to help him count the ingredients? Watch the video below to add with the properties of operations!
Daniel wants to make “ants on a log” snacks to bring to the class party. He needs to make sure that he has enough ingredients. Can you help him count the raisins and spoonfuls of nut butter?
You will use the properties of operations to add and count the amounts of each ingredient. First, you need to look at an addition equation to see which property you want to use. Once you choose a property of operations, think about what the property tells you about addition. Then you can use what you know to solve the addition equation and count the amounts of each ingredient!
Daniel counted this pack of raisins. He added 17 plus 25 and got 42 raisins. Now Daniel has a new pack of raisins that he puts into two piles. One pile has 25 raisins, and the other pile has 17 raisins. How many raisins are in the new pack? You can use the addition sentence 25 plus 17. Which property could you use to solve these addition equations?
The commutative property! The commutative property says that you can switch the addends and you will still get the same sum.
Daniel says that 17 plus 25 equals 42. You can use the commutative property to find the sum of 25 plus 17. What is the sum of 25 plus 17?
42! Daniel wants to add 25 and 17 to check.
Did you get 42? 5 plus 7 equals 12. Don’t forget to carry over the 1! 1 plus 2 plus 1 equals 4. The commutative property works! Daniel has two groups of 42 raisins.
Daniel needs to count the spoonfuls of nut butter. He has 27 spoonfuls, 36 spoonfuls, and 11 spoonfuls of nut butter. He adds 27 plus 36 first. Then he adds that sum to 11 and gets 74 spoonfuls in all. Daniel wants to count more spoonfuls. He has 27 spoonfuls, 36 spoonfuls, and 11 spoonfuls of nut butter. How many spoonfuls of nut butter does Daniel have now? This time, Daniel wants to add 36 plus 11 first. You can use the addition sentence 27 plus 36 plus 11, where 36 plus 11 are in parentheses. Which property can you use to solve this addition equation?
The associative property! The associative property says that you can add the addends in any order. You will still get the same sum.
Daniel got 74 spoonfuls when he added 27 plus 36 first. You can use the associative property to find the sum of 27 plus 36 plus 11. What is the sum of 27 plus 36 plus 11?
74! Daniel wants to add 27 plus 36 plus 11. Start by adding 36 plus 11.
Did you get 47? 6 plus 1 equals 7. 3 plus 1 equals 4. Now add 27 to 47.
Did you get 74? 7 plus 7 equals 14. Don’t forget to carry over the 1! 1 plus 2 plus 4 equals 7. The associative property works! Daniel has two groups of 74 spoonfuls of nut butter
Daniel has all the ingredients he needs to make his healthy snacks!
Thank you for your help adding using the properties of operations!
Question
Look at this addition sentence. Which property of operations could you use to help solve it? Why would you choose that property of operations?
\({55 + 0 = ?}\)
You could use the identity property! You would use this property because the addition equation adds a 0 to a number.
