Do you know who Abraham Lincoln was?
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States.
Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin in Kentucky, on February 12th, 1809.
That was along time ago. About 200 years in the past.
He was a very tall president. He was 6ft and 4 inches. And, with his top hat, he was even taller.
During his time as president, the states were facing a big problem. The seven states supported slavery.
Owning people and making them work without pay. The northern states did not.
The states could not agree, so the southern states wanted to seperate, and make their own country.
This disagreement resulted in a civil war. The war lasted 4 years.
Lincoln won the war, and freed the enslaved people when he wrote the emacipation proclimation.
This day is celebrated and called "Juneteeth."
The south returned, and together the north and south remained one country, instead of two seperate countries.
We remember the things Abraham Lincoln did in many ways:
He is on the face of the five dollar bill, his face is on the penny, theirs a Lincoln memorial in Washington, D.C., his face is carved in the Mt. Rushmoore, and today we are celebrating his birthday.
