How is a tree like other plants?

Did you know that a tree is a type of plant? It is, and it needs the same things all plants need, like sunlight, water, air, and soil. Click on each image to learn more about trees!

Just like other plants you learned about, trees have roots that take in water, minerals, and nutrients from the soil. They have a stem too, but it is called a trunk. Water and nutrients travel up the trunk and up to the leaves. The trunk is also very important because it provides support for the tree so that it does not fall over.

The bark on the trunk protects the tree and keeps water inside. Like the leaves of other plants, the leaves on a tree do the work of making food for the tree. Trees are very important because they clean the air and make oxygen for us to breathe.
