Welcome to the Kite Festival! Let’s get ready for a great day!

We have some beautiful kites to fly and dollar problems to solve with Stella the Starfish. Did you know starfish can have up to 40 arms? Stella can hold on to a ton of kites!

Put on your flip flops and head out onto the sand. Stella needs your help!

Here comes our first kite!

How many coins are showing with Stella’s kite?
Our kite has 4 dimes, 4 nickels, and 15 pennies

Do you know the value of the coins?
We have 40 cents + 20 cents + 15 cents!

We have 75 cents.

Hold on! We can get 75 cents with how many quarters?
Surfs up! It takes 3 quarters to equal 75 cents.

There are many different ways to equal different amounts with different coins.

Let’s look at some other coin examples.

Here comes our second kite!

How many coins are showing with Stella’s kite?
We have 2 dimes, 4 nickels, and 10 pennies.

Let’s add up their value! That’s 20 cents + 20 cents + 10 cents. Wow, that’s 50 cents!

Hold on! Stella sees another equal amount in quarters. Do you see it? We can add 2 quarters, or 25 cents + 25 cents, to equal 50 cents!

You have the hang of it!

Enough practice. Let’s fly higher with a bigger challenge.

Stella has a very special kite flight. See if you can solve the problem. Which kite equals $1?

The red kite has 1 quarter, 3 dimes, 4 nickels, and 10 pennies.
The blue kite has 1 quarter, 4 dimes, 5 nickels, and 10 pennies.

Let’s find the value of each kite!

The red kite equals 25 cents + 30 cents + 20 cents + 10 cents. That equals 85 cents. Wipeout! That’s not a dollar. You can also find the total value of the coins by counting up: 25¢, 35¢, 45¢, 55¢, 60¢, 65¢, 70¢, 75¢, 76¢, 77¢, 78¢, 79¢, 80¢, 81¢, 82¢, 83¢, 84¢, 85¢. Let’s look at our blue kite.

The blue kite equals 25 cents + 40 cents + 25 cents + 10 cents. That’s $1, or 100 cents!

When we have $1.00, we use a decimal point to show how many cents we have over 100¢. We can say $1.00 is one dollar and zero cents!

If we have a value below $1.00, we write the amount using a ¢ sign.

The blue kite solves our dollar problem. Life’s a beach!

Stella the Starfish wants to try another dollar problem.

Which kite equals $1? Be “shore” of yourself.

The yellow kite has 1 quarter, 3 dimes, 3 nickels, and 10 pennies.
The purple kite has 1 quarter, 3 dimes, 6 nickels, and 15 pennies.

Let’s find the value of each kite!

The yellow kite equals 25 cents + 30 cents + 15 cents + 10 cents. That equals 80 cents. Wipeout! We are close, but that’s not 1 dollar.

Let’s count the value of the purple kite coins. We have 25 cents + 30 cents + 30 cents + 15 cents. That equals $1, or 100 cents!

This is so much fun in the sun!

Surf’s up! It’s time for kite surfing. Are you ready to test your expert dollar skills with Stella the Starfish?

Check out Stella’s kite surfing challenge!

It costs 75 cents to have cool sunglasses like Stella’s. If you have 100 cents, or $1.00, you can buy the same glasses! But what would be your change? How much money would you have left?

We can subtract 75 cents from 100 cents.

100 cents - 75 cents = 25 cents! 25 cents is our change, or what we have left after buying cool sunglasses!

Well, we definitely need a kite board to surf! Kite boards cost 78 cents.
And we have $1, or 100 cents! How much money will we have left if we buy a kite board?
We can subtract 78 cents from 100 cents.
100 - 78 = 22
After we buy our kite board, we will have 22 cents left in change.

Let’s ride the wave to one more challenge.

It costs 50 cents to go kite surfing with Stella the Starfish. If you have $1.00, what would be your change?

We can subtract 50 cents from 100 cents.
100 cents - 50 cents = 50 cents left.
You got it! What a sunny day!

Stella the Starfish had her best day ever with you. Thank you for counting coins to a dollar and making change. Now it’s your turn to enjoy the surf and sand in your dollar lesson! And don’t forget: life is better at the beach!
