Ava’s grandma invited their family and friends for Thanksgiving dinner. Each person will need 5 items per place setting.

Can you help Ava set the tables for Thanksgiving dinner?

The first table has 10 guests. Each person needs 5 items per place setting. Ava needs to multiply to figure out how many place setting items she will need altogether. She will multiply 5 times 10.

She knows that she can use half of 10 x 10 to find the product of 5 x 10. Let's skip count by 10 ten times.

10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100

10 x 10 equals 100. Half of 100 is 50, so 5 times ten equals 50.

Ava writes down 50 place setting items for the first table!

The next table will have only 4 guests sitting at it. Ava needs 5 place setting items for each person, so she needs to multiply 5 times 4.

This time she skip counts by 5, four times:

5, 10, 15, 20

5 times 4 equals 20!

Ava writes down 20 place setting items for the second table.

There are 5 people at this last table. How many place settings are needed?

To find out, Ava can find the product of 5 times 5.

Ava decides to use another strategy to find the answer: the multiplication chart!

She finds the row for 5 and then the column for 5 to find the product of 5 multiplied by 5. She needs 25 place setting items!

Can you help make sure Ava multiplied correctly?

Look at the multiplication table, and find the row for 5 and the column for 5 and find where they meet. Are you at 25? Yes!

Now the dishes for dessert! Ava needs to count the dessert dishes her grandma has for Thanksgiving. Can you help Ava multiply 10 rows of 4 dishes?

She uses the 10s zero strategy to solve 10 times 4. Move the 4 to the tens place and add a zero in the ones place. 10 times 4 equals 40!

Ava uses a multiplication chart to check her work. She finds the row for 10 and then the column for 4 to find the product. 10 multiplied by 4 is 40 dessert dishes! She was correct! Ava has enough dishes!

You did a great job helping Ava find the multiplication facts of 5 and 10. Now she is ready for all the guests!
