Goal: Learn what the terms halves and equal parts mean.
You and a friend want to eat something, but there is only one left. How do you share it? One way is to divide it into equal parts.
A whole is all the parts of a shape or group. Dividing a whole shape or a group of objects into equal parts means that you divide them into parts or smaller groups that are the same size.
Let’s say you wanted to split this last kiwi with a friend.
You both want the parts to be the same size so that you’ll both get a fair share. You can cut the kiwi in half to get 2 halves.
The kiwi is now cut in half, or 2 equal parts.
When you cut an object into 2 equal parts, each part is one half of a whole. Half means it is divided into 2 equal parts. Just one of the equal parts is called a half, and more than one half is called halves. 2 halves make 1 whole. Click on the whole pear below to reveal two equal halves of the pear.
Halves can also be made by splitting a group of items into groups that are equal. Look at the candy below.
There are 4 pieces of candy! What would be half this amount?
If you divide the candy in half, you have 2 equal groups of candy. Half of 4 candy pieces is 2 candy pieces.
