Goal: Analyze data on a line plot.

Q the Robot has another line-plot graph activity for us in Central Park. We will help Q collect and analyze the temperatures in the park in August. Let’s go!

Q the Robot wants you to help him analyze the temperatures of August on a line plot.

Do you know how many days are in August?
That’s right! There are 31 days in August. Each day in the park is a different temperature.

Let’s follow Q and collect the data!

Q has collected most of our data. Let’s fill in what he has not finished.

Different days in August had different temperatures. Let’s look at 70 degrees and count the tally marks. We have 1, 2, 3, 4, and a slash. Remember, that makes 5! There were a total of 11 days in August when the temperature was 70 degrees.

But, wait! It gets hotter! Temperatures also reached 80 degrees. Let’s look at the tally marks of data Q collected. There were 5, 6, 7, 8 days when the temperature was 80 degrees.

You have the hang of it!

Let’s fill in 90-degree days. There were 5, 6, 7 days of 90-degree weather in August.

And Q remembers the super-hot days of 100 degrees. There were 5 days like that!
Now that we have all of our data, let’s create our line plot!

We have gathered our data, so let’s set up our line plot starting with our title and number line.

We are looking at August temperatures each day, so let’s title our line plot “August Temperatures in Central Park.”

Next, we need our number line. Let’s add the temperatures for the days we are gathering data for. We have 70 degrees, 80 degrees, 90 degrees, and 100 degrees.

Great job! Q the Robot is hot after all of this hard work! Now let’s add our daily temperature data!

When we make line plots, we use an X to show our data. Since we are tracking daily temperatures, let’s make our Xs equal to daily temperatures.

Let’s add the data Q helped us gather.
There were 11 days in August that were 70 degrees.
There were 8 days in August that were 80 degrees.
Seven days were 90 degrees, and 5 days were a super-hot 100 degrees!
Our line plot is complete!

Way to shine!

Now that our line plot is complete, let’s analyze Q’s data!

How many days did Q keep track of the temperature in August?
Gotcha! We already learned there are 31 days in August. However, let’s look at our graph. Each X counts as 1 day. So, if we want to find the total number of days of different temperatures, we can add them up.

Way to sizzle!

Let’s analyze!
What temperature were most of the days in August?
This question is intense!

There were 11 days of 70 degree weather in August.

Let’s analyze!

Whew, it’s getting hot in here! We have a challenging question.
How many more 90-degree days did Central Park have than 100-degree days?

There were 7 days of 90-degree weather and 5 days of 100-degree weather. We can subtract to find the difference. 7 days minus 5 days equals 2 days. There were 2 more days of 90-degree weather than 100-degree weather!

You are on fire!

Let’s analyze!

How many days were 80 degrees?
If we look at our graph, we can simply add up all of the Xs above the column marked 80 degrees. There are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 days!

Excellent work analyzing the temperatures in Central Park!

It’s time for Q the Robot to head back to Central Park. He has had a blast creating and analyzing line plots with you. Use everything you have learned to help you finish this lesson!

Let’s continue to analyze data on a line plot. Click each line plot to analyze the data about the coins in Q’s pocket.

Coins in Q the Robot’s Pocket - Plot graph: 6 x's = 6 pennies, 3 x's = 3 nickels, 5 x's = 5 dimes, 2 x's = 2 quarters

What is the title of the line plot?

Coins in Q the Robot’s Pocket - Plot graph: 6 Xs = 6 pennies, 3 Xs = 3 nickels, 5 Xs = 5 dimes, 2 Xs = 2 quarters

How many dimes does Q have in his pocket?
