Reflection

Everyone has a personal aesthetic that can be seen in how they do their hair, the clothing they choose to wear, and how they decorate their personal space. A personal aesthetic determines what a person is automatically drawn to. Your personal aesthetic is at work when you look at something and immediately decide whether you like it or not. For example, you will not like all artwork, and that’s ok because there is a large range of aesthetics.

So, what is an aesthetic statement? It is a short description of your artistic taste in the language of art. Do you enjoy bright colors or more muted colors? Do you like large, open landscapes with deep space, or do you find those artworks with shallow space more interesting? Do you enjoy artwork with a lot of repetition, rhythm, and movement, or are you drawn to a more subtle use of rhythm?

Write 1-2 paragraphs explaining your aesthetic using the language of art. Use your answers to the questions given above and your artwork-comparison paragraph to get ideas of what to write about. Make sure to express your aesthetic as clearly and completely as you can because you will be using it for personal critiques later on.
