What is the role of the nervous system?

The nervous system is your body’s control system. It sends, receives, and processes nerve impulses throughout the body. These nerve impulses tell your muscles and organs what to do and how to respond to the environment. The central nervous system is made up of the brain and the spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system is made up of all the nerves throughout the rest of the body.

The peripheral (per IF er uhl) nervous system includes the nerves that branch off from the brain and the spinal cord. These nerves carry nerve impulses from the central nervous system to the other parts of the body and from the body back to the central nervous system.

Question

What are some ways to protect your central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) from injury?

When riding in a car, wear your seatbelt. When riding your bike, skating, or skateboarding, wear a helmet. If you are diving into water, make sure the water is deep enough that you won’t hit your head on the bottom.
