Fifteen-year-old Geena is at the doctor’s office with her older sister, Alisha, who is getting married next month. Alisha and her fiancé don’t want to have children right away, so Alisha is interested in exploring her contraception, or birth control, options with her healthcare provider. Since Geena has many questions about contraception, Alisha invited her to come to the appointment, too. That way, the two of them can get reliable information straight from a medical professional.
As they wait for the doctor, Geena looks around the exam room at all the posters and brochures for different contraceptive methods. Pills, patches, rings, IUDs, injections—and these are just the ones available at the clinic! She had no idea there were so many. Geena’s glad Alisha brought her along; she’s got a lot to learn!
In this lesson, you will learn about some of the different types of contraception available in the United States. You will also learn about their effectiveness at preventing pregnancy and about the benefits and risks associated with each one.
