Introduction

How can we help ourselves add?

Goal:

Goal:

Olivia loves reading about her favorite character, Lily the garden fairy. Olivia has 6 books in the series, and she sees that there are 5 more books she hasn’t read! If Olivia gets all the books in the series, how many books will she have about Lily?

We can help Olivia by adding the number of books she has read to the number of new books! Remember, an addition sentence looks like this:

part + part = whole

Let’s look at the books all together and see if we can help Olivia add.

6 blue books and 5 orange books.

We know we need to add the 6 books Olivia owns with the 5 books she does not yet have. What is the easiest way for us to add 6 + 5?

Question

What do we call the different ways we can help ourselves add?
