Today, we are going to take a look at double negatives. What exactly is a double negative? Let’s find out.
Negative words are words that mean no. We only need one negative word in a sentence. When we try to use two, then we run into a problem.
Common negative words are no, not, nobody, nothing, never, and none. When we use two of these words together in one sentence, they actually cancel each other out.
Let’s take a look at this sentence. She never goes nowhere without her favorite doll. Can you find the negative words?
Never and nowhere are our negative words in this sentence.
What this sentence should say is that she never goes anywhere without her favorite doll.
How about this sentence? I won’t never get on another airplane in my entire life!
How many negative words do you see?
There are two – won’t and never.
One of those negatives needs to go.
We can change either one of the negative words to a positive one.
I won’t ever get on another airplane in my entire life!
Or
I will never get on another airplane in my entire life!
Both of these sentences are correct because they only contain one negative word.
Pay close attention to your own writing and always be on the lookout for double negatives.
