Goal: Can you use place-value patterns to count by 100s?

Isla practiced 10 hours. Then she practiced for another 300 hours. Wow! How can we find out how many hours she practiced this month? We can add 10 + 300. It is quicker to count by 100s!

We can count by 100s from 10 to find Isla’s hours for this month. If we want to count by 100s, we will need a thousand chart.

10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100

We know that the thousand chart grows by 10 in each row. These numbers have 0 in the ones place. They grow by 1 in the tens place until 100. 100 has a hundreds place!

10, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900

The thousand chart grows by 100 in each column. These numbers have 0 in the ones place. They have 1 in the tens place. The hundreds place grows by 1.

We can use this pattern to help Isla count 300 more hours. Let’s try it!
