Ms. Garcia teaches guitar lessons after school. These are her four students: Ian, Sonia, Ray, and Breanne. They are getting ready for Ms. Garcia’s guitar recital at the end of the month.

Ms. Garcia would like her students to practice their songs before the recital. She will give a prize to the student who practices the most this month! Each student has already practiced some. Ian has practiced 130 minutes, Sonia has practiced 60 minutes, Ray has practiced 80 minutes, and Breanne has practiced 110 minutes.

Ian has been practicing the guitar a lot at home. In fact, he has practiced another 600 minutes! Let’s help Ian find the total amount of minutes he’s been practicing.

This is a thousand chart. It is similar to a hundred chart, but a thousand chart shows the numbers 10 to 1,000. What do you notice about this chart? That’s right! Each row skip counts by 10, see? 10, 20, 30, 40. When we move down each column, the numbers jump by 100: 10, 110, 210, 310. We can use this thousand chart to help us count by 100s today.

Remember, Ian has already practiced 130 minutes. Can you find 130? Good! After learning about the prize, Ian practiced another 600 minutes. We can find the total amount of minutes Ian practiced by skip counting by hundreds. Ready? 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600. Great job! We just added on Ian’s extra 600 minutes of practicing. He practiced the guitar for a total of 730 minutes! Great job Ian!

Sonia has also been practicing the guitar at home. She had practiced 60 minutes when Ms. Garcia told the students about the prize. Now Sonia has practiced another 300 minutes! Let’s help her find the total amount of minutes she’s been practicing.

We can use the thousand chart to help us find Sonia’s total amount of practice time. Let’s start by finding the number 60. Very good! Sonia has practiced another 300 minutes. Let’s skip count by moving down this column. Ready? 100, 200, 300. Great job! We just added on Sonia’s extra 300 minutes of practicing. She practiced the guitar for a total of 360 minutes.

Hmmm, are you starting to notice any other patterns in the thousand chart? Look at the place values in this column. The one’s place value is always 0 and the ten’s place value is always 6. The hundred’s place value goes up by 1 each time we add 100. Very interesting!

Ray is practicing his guitar. He had practiced 80 minutes earlier in the month and has now practiced another 500 minutes! Wow! Let’s help him find the total amount of minutes he’s been practicing.

Can you use the thousand chart to help us find out how many minutes Ray has practiced? Remember, Ray began with 80 minutes of practice and then practiced another 500 minutes. What number will you start on? Yes, 80! Now you will skip count 500. Nice work! Ray has practiced a total of 580 minutes.

Notice that the one’s place value is always 0 and the ten’s place value is always 8. The hundred’s place value goes up by 1 each time we add 100.

Breanne has been practicing her guitar too. She had practiced 110 minutes earlier in the month and has now practiced another 500 minutes! Wow! Let’s help her find the total amount of minutes she’s practiced.

Here is the thousand chart. What number will you begin on? That’s right, 110! You will begin on this number because Breanne had already practiced 110 minutes. Ready to jump? 100, 200, 300, 400, 500. How many minutes did Breanne practice in total this month? Correct, 610!

Ms. Garcia is so happy her students have been practicing so much. Ian practiced 730 minutes, Sonia practiced 360 minutes, Ray practiced 580 minutes, and Breanne practiced 610 minutes.

Who practiced their guitar the most this month? Yes, Ian! He has earned the trophy! Thank you for finding patterns in the thousand chart today. You helped Ms. Garcia find the student who practiced the most this month.
