The stem of a plant is the pathway between what happens in the roots and the leaves. In the stem, the plant forms hundreds of tiny tubes through which water rises from the roots to circulate throughout the upper parts of the plants.

The water, carrying soil substances to the leaves, does not help in watering the plant until it meets with air and sunlight in the leaves. After the food is made in the leaves, it flows downwards to the lower parts of the plant along the stem just beneath the outer covering or bark.
