Water Absorption Project

1. Peel the skin or bark from a plant stem. You will discover a layer of plant food. This layer is a damp, glistening, jellylike film. 

2. Do the following experiment so that you can watch water as it travels up the stem.

a. Put red food coloring in one glass of water, and green in the other. 

b. Split a stalk of celery part way and place one part into the glass with green liquid, and one part into the red liquid.

c. Let the celery sit overnight.

d. What happened to the celery? Explain how it happened.

e. Draw a picture of the experiment in your Science Lesson Notes.

3. Try splitting the stem of a white flower and repeating the experiment.
