Lucas loves his first-grade classroom! He found patterns around the room. Can you help him finish each pattern?

A pattern has items that repeat. A pattern can look like this. This is called an AB pattern. A pattern can also look like this. This is called an AAB pattern. We will finish the patterns Lucas finds by adding one more item to them.

Are you ready to help Lucas? Let’s look at the backpacks. Lucas found a pattern! There’s a purple backpack and then a green backpack. Purple, green. It’s an AB pattern. What comes next?

A purple backpack! We continued the pattern.

Lucas sees another pattern in the bookshelf. Look at the books! There’s a small book, another small book, and then a large book. Here are two more small books. It’s an AAB pattern. What comes next?

Yes! A large book comes next. You continued the pattern.

Here’s another pattern. It is made up of pencils. This pattern has a yellow pencil, a red pencil, a yellow pencil, a red pencil, and a yellow pencil. It’s an AB pattern. What comes next?

That’s right! A red pencil comes next. You continued the pattern.

Lucas found another pattern in the backpacks. What kind of pattern did he find?

It’s an AAB pattern! There are two large backpacks, a small backpack, two large backpacks, and a small backpack. We need to finish this pattern. What comes next?

Great job! A large backpack comes next.

Here’s another pattern made up of books. What kind of pattern is this?

It’s an AB pattern! The pattern has a blue book and then a yellow book. What comes next?

You’re right! A yellow book comes next.

Let’s finish one more pattern! What kind of pattern is this?

It’s an AAB pattern! The pattern has a paperclip, another paperclip, and then a sharpener. What comes next?

Fantastic! A paperclip comes next.
