Underhand Throw

 

Goal:

Action: Hold the ball in your hand. Use your arm, and toss the ball at your target.

Technique:

  • Hold the ball with one hand.
  • Swing the arm down and back behind the body.
  • Step toward the target with the foot opposite of your throwing arm.
  • Keep your arm close to the body as you swing it forward toward the target.
  • Release and flip the ball to the target with your fingers.
  • (Variation: arm can be swung in a complete backward circle. Ball is released by the hip.)
  • You can also underhand throw a ball with two hands by swinging the ball between your legs.

Skill Activities:

  • See how far you can throw a ball underhand.
  • Throw a ball underhand and try to hit a target.
  • Underhand throw the ball as high as you can.
  • Underhand throw the ball in the air, and try the following activities before the ball hits the ground.
  • You could also try to catch the ball after doing one of these activities:
    • spin in a circle to the right
    • spin in a circle to the left
    • clap your hands (increase the number of claps, and see how many times you can clap while the ball is in the air)
    • touch the floor
    • sit down on the floor
    • throw ball to another place and move to catch the ball (run, hop, skip, slide)
