The American flag is a celebration of the United States of America. Our flag represents the freedom we have in this country. Click through to learn the history of our flag and how the flag is celebrated in America.
The first American flag had 13 stars and stripes. After new states were added to the United States, more stars were added to the flag. Today there are 50 stars on the flag that represent the 50 states in America. We celebrate the flag by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. We also celebrate the flag on Flag Day, which is celebrated on June 14. Many Americans celebrate Flag Day by displaying the Red, White, and Blue in front of homes and businesses. There are many rules and traditions on how to treat the flag respectfully. One tradition is the flag should be flown when the weather is good, unless it is an all-weather flag made of special material. Another tradition is if the flag is in a parade or carried alongside other flags, it must be carried to the right of the others. The flag must be raised swiftly and lowered slowly. The flag is also folded a certain way so that it never touches the floor and it is always folded into a triangle. The flag is flown upside down in the state of a major emergency, such as a ship sinking. |
