The periodic table is very organized. The periods of the periodic table are the horizontal rows. The elements in the same period or row all have certain things in common. The elements in the first period or row all have one electron orbital. Elements in the second period or row all have two electron orbitals.

The groups or columns in the periodic table all have the same number of electrons in their outer orbital. These are called valence electrons.
