An urban area is a city. A rural area is a countryside.
Question
Most people live near urban areas. Why?
Urban areas have more to offer a population of people. Cities have more businesses, houses, restaurants, shopping, and things to do.
Did you know that almost 50% of the population live near the ocean. Why do you think that is?
Many cities were built around ports, which provide opportunities for trade, jobs, and transportation. Living near water also gives people access to a variety of recreational activities, like boating, fishing, swimming, and surfing.

| Climate | The majority of the population lives in a temperate climate. More big cities are situated in this climate than in any other. These areas usually experience the four seasons and have a wider variety of temperature changes throughout the year. |
| Natural Resources | Natural resources are materials that occur in nature that can be used for economic gain (forests, water, minerals, and oil). Cities are built around resources so that they can be utilized. |
| Work Opportunities | Cities offer more opportunities for people to get a job and make money. More work opportunities lead to a greater population. From Boston, Massachusetts, to San Jose, California, big cities offer a variety of job opportunities that bring many people to the area. |
