Problem-Solving

What do you do if you have a problem? Are there ways to help you solve it? Can you identify the problem in the picture?

If you said the girls looked like they were fighting, that's right.

There is a problem. The girls are fighting over a toy.

How can we solve this problem? There are some easy steps to follow in order to find the best solution to a problem.

First, identify the problem.
Next, gather information and list possible options that could be a solution.
Consider the advantages and disadvantages of each option.
Then choose a solution and implement, or use, it.
-Lastly, evaluate the effectiveness of the solution you chose. Was it the best choice and why?

So let's follow these steps in our example.

What is the problem? The girls are fighting over a toy. Let's gather information. Why do you think the children are fighting?
Are they making good choices? Do you think they are following the rules?

No, the kids aren't sharing.

What are some possible solutions? (PAUSE)
These children could share, take turns, play with something else, or put the toys away.

Based on our options, if the children shared the toys, an advantage would be that everyone gets to play. If the children put the toys away, a disadvantage would be that no one gets to play with the toys.

If it was important to follow the rules, which solution would meet these needs? Probably having the children share or take turns. The advantage to this solution would be that everyone gets to play with the toys.

Now let's evaluate the effectiveness of our solution. Would that solution be effective and achieve our goal? Yes, sharing and taking turns are following the rules. Everyone is happy with the solution.
