This document stated that the land north of the Ohio River and east of the Mississippi River would be part of the United States. The Northwest Ordinance also included policies and laws for people who moved there. Read the articles and see if any sound familiar to laws we have today.

  1. It encouraged people to move to the new territories.
  2. It provided laws for the new territories that would eventually become states.

The Northwest Ordinance paved the way for the following territories to become states: Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota. Also, some of the laws in the Northwest Ordinance were included in the U.S. Constitution.
