A Strong Relationship
What is the connection between the sun and the Earth?

To understand the relationship between the Earth and the sun, you need to first know where they are positioned.
The sun is in the center of the the solar system, and the Earth, along with the other planets orbit, or move around, the sun.
It takes the Earth 365 days to make one orbit around the sun. As the Earth orbits the sun, different regions of the Earth are closer to the sun than others. The equinoxes and solstices are based on where the Earth is in relation to the sun.
During a solstice, the sun is farthest away from the equator. During an equinox, the sun is closest to the equator.
The Earth's position in relation to the sun determines what parts of the Earth experience summer, winter, fall, and spring.
You will learn more about equinoxes and solstices in this lesson.
